Quatrains in Homage to William H. Gass

The assertive brevity of red
the definitive bludgeon of black
odd philosophies tricked out in ochre
mock festoons that maroon echoes back

the beguiling shyness of lilac
the bland ambiguity of tan
the crushed nobility of crimson
the long wave within amber's warm plan

Poem's first line is drawn from William H. Gass, On Being Blue: A Philosophical Inquiry (2007)
